This can be a very fast paced job! Paramedics or high level Emergency Medical
Technicians deal with health emergencies from accidents to illness. They privide
vital care on route to the hospital and deal with life and death situations. They have
to work very hard to save lives. A paramedic works with the fire departments and
police in emergency situations. They need to quickly assess the patients condition
and gather facts about the patient’s medical history. They have just a few moments
to make the effort to stabilize the patient’s condition. The paramedic also is able to
administer medication both orally or intravenously on the scene.
They serve in all types of emergency medical transportation. It could be an
ambulance, airplane, medical helicopter, and more.
A Paramedic must have excellent communication skills both orally and written. They
must be able to deal with patients and their family/friends. A Paramedic must be
extremely observant.
To become a Paramedic, you must have a high school diploma, and then begin a
paramedic training program. Then progress to an associate degree program to
learn advanced medical techniques and anatomy and physiology. All states require
a Paramedic to be licensed through the National Registry of Emergency Medical
Technicians.
