That Tastes So-o-o Good!
Everyone has their favorite food they LOVE to eat!
Have you ever wondered how you can taste your
favorite food? Tasting has everything to do with your
taste buds!
Taste buds are sensory organs found on your tongue.
These organs allow you to taste the four basic tastes
which are sweet, salty, sour and bitter.
If you stick out your tongue and look into the mirror,
you will see bumps on it.  They are called papillae.
Most of these contain taste buds which have a very
sensitive microscopic hair called microvilli in them.
These tiny hairs send messages to the brain about what
you are tasting, so you know that it is sweet, salty, sour
or bitter.
The average person has around 10,000 taste buds in
their month.  They are replaced every two weeks or so.
There are two things that reduce the number of taste
buds in your mouth.  The first one is  smoking.  Smoking
can reduce the amount of taste buds you have.  The
second is age.  An older person has reduced working
taste buds.  As a result, younger people have a stronger
sense of taste.
Your nose plays an important part in this also.  In the
upper part of your nose there are Olfactory Receptors
that have special cells which help you smell.  These
receptors send messages to the brain too.  While you’re
chewing food, the food releases chemicals that travel up
into your nose, triggering the receptors.  Together with
the taste buds, they send a message to your brain.  In
this way you learn the true flavor of the food you’re
eating.  When you have a cold and your nose is stuffy,
you will notice that your food doesn’t have much taste
because your Olfactory Receptors can’t receive the
chemicals from the food!
